The History of Proton Pass

The story does not begin with the password manager itself — it begins with a wave of massive data breaches, with the founding of Proton, and with a long-running question: why should protecting your online identity be harder than giving it away?

The Problem Proton Pass Set Out to Solve

By the late 2010s, the average internet user had accumulated dozens, often hundreds, of online accounts. The industry's implicit answer was password reuse: people chose one or two memorable passwords and recycled them across every service they touched. Attackers understood this perfectly. SimpleLogin and the Alias Foundation (2022)

A crucial chapter arrived in 2022, when Proton acquired SimpleLogin, a beloved open-source email aliasing service. SimpleLogin solved a deceptively simple problem: it let people sign up for online services without ever revealing their real email address, generating unique forwarding aliases that could be switched off the moment they were abused. The acquisition brought both the technology and the team's deep expertise in protecting user identity.

That expertise would prove decisive. While other password managers treated an email address as just another field in a form, Proton understood that the address itself is an identity — the thread that data brokers pull to stitch together your entire online life. Building alias generation directly into a password manager was the logical fusion of the two products, and it is exactly what happened next.

The Launch of Proton Pass (2023)

In June 2023, Proton unveiled Proton Pass, introducing it as the latest pillar of the Proton ecosystem. The launch emphasized three principles that still define the product today: end-to-end and zero-knowledge encryption for every item in the vault, full open-source transparency, and the convenience of a single Proton Account across all privacy tools. Early adopters — many of them existing Proton Mail users — received a password manager that felt instantly familiar yet more integrated than anything they had tried before.

  • 2024 — Pass 2.0 rolls out a free tier with unlimited logins, plus passkey support and unlimited devices for everyone.
  • 2024–2025 — Features such as the integrated 2FA authenticator, shared vaults, dark web monitoring and Proton Sentinel protection reach users worldwide.

Two launch decisions drew particular attention. First, aliases arrived from day one: Proton Pass users could create hide-my-email addresses without opening a separate app, tying every login to an identity that could be severed in one click. Second, the vault was built for the post-password era from the start, with passkey support added early and treated as a first-class citizen rather than an afterthought.

Proton Pass Today and Tomorrow

Today Proton Pass is a complete credential-management platform: it stores passwords, passkeys, secure notes, credit cards and identity profiles; generates two-factor codes beside the logins they protect; syncs across unlimited devices; and alerts users when their data appears in known breaches. All of it remains open source, independently audited and governed by Swiss privacy law — and all of it is protected by a company whose entire reputation rests on not reading its users' data.

Looking back, the rise of Proton Pass is really the story of password security becoming ordinary. The same encrypted vault that protects a developer's credentials in Zurich protects a freelancer's client accounts in Buenos Aires and a family's shared logins in Toronto — without any of them needing to study cryptography first.
